Golden Crocoduck nominees ponder improbability

Sources are cited below. Please don't comment on the following two points, because I'll answer them here:

1) I know the lottery winning check in the video is made out to Andrew Whittaker, and I call him Jack Whittacker. In the time it takes you to point this out in the comments section, you could google the name and see why.

2) Yes, the story of the German bomber was true. My father survived, but the man standing next to him was killed. Whether or not the pilot spent a few seconds waving goodbye to a girlfriend I don't know, but if he had dropped his bombs just a split second earlier, the outcome might have been very different.

3) It's not clear whether VenomFangX runs the Horsewillbe channel. But the Horsewillbe video was the one that was nominated. Whatever he wants to call himself on YouTube, he's still the same guy.

4) Towards the end of the video, Jesse8857 shows a calculation at the bottom of the page, which is: "Chance of 1 million beneficial mutations occurring in 1 species raised to the number of species." He doesn't explain why he is doing this, or how it represents probability. That's the ya-da-ya-da-ya-da.

5) Thanks to all those who told me VenomFangX/Horsewillbe was not home-schooled by creationist parents. So my calculation of the chances of him reading a primary school textbook is based on fatuous information. Actually, I wasn't serious.

6) For any issues regarding my video "Evolution is like a box of chocolates" please see my video "Evolution is like a box of chocolates" on the Potholer54debunks channel.

Electric Cars Are Rubbish. Aren't They?

Electric Cars Are Rubbish. Aren't They?
21st March 2013
The Head of Steam, Liverpool

Nothing but glorified golf carts that take forever to charge and then run out of power on the way to the shops. Try finding somewhere to charge them. They cost a fortune to buy and another fortune to replace the battery when its range drops to half. You don't want to believe all that nonsense about them being environmentally-friendly. They are actually worse than petrol-powered cars because the batteries are made from dirty lithium and use electricity made from dirtier coal. There isn't even enough lithium in the world to make all the new batteries we'd need anyway. Electric cars are just rubbish. Aren't they? -- Robert says no. This evening he'll tell us why he thinks we need to put away our prejudices and think seriously about electric vehicles as the future of transport.

Robert Llewellyn is an actor, writer, comedian, TV presenter and self-described wishy-washy liberal best known for playing the android Kryten in the long-running BBC sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf. He presented Scrapheap Challenge for 10 years and these days he can be seen on TV presenting the shows Car-Pool on Dave and How Do They Do It? on Channel 5. He is probably the UK's most prominent advocate of electric vehicles (EV) and presents a YouTube-based show called Fully Charged which documents current developments in the electric vehicle industry. He also writes a column for the EV website The Charging Point. He has been notably critical of BBC Top Gear's position on electric vehicles -- a case in point being the Top Gear "review" of the Tesla V in 2008 which is currently the subject of a lawsuit by Tesla. This February he debated the motion "This House Believes Electric Cars are the Future of Transport" at the Oxford Union. The motion was carried.

.. there is no recorded instance of psychics solving a criminal case or providing evidence or information which led directly to its solution."

From episode 1 of 'James Randi - Psychic Investigator' (1991)

Despite claims to the contrary, there are no known cases where information provided by a psychic has played a direct part in solving a crime (which is probably also why there are no official police psychics).

Despite apparently good intentions, psychics can actually hinder or harm a criminal investigation, tying up valuable time and resources of police investigators, spent in pursuing useless leads. This can potentially put lives at risk.

CISPA is back

Last year, right on the heels of our historic victory against SOPA, a piece of really nasty legislation almost passed that would have radically undermined online privacy.

It was called CISPA. And it raced through the US House of Representatives, passing before any of us had a chance to react. We stalled the bill in the Senate, but now CISPA is back, and we don't want to make the same mistake twice. Before there is *any* movement on the bill, we want to send a strong message to Congress that CISPA shouldn't pass.

Wait, what is CISPA? And why does it matter so much?

CISPA (the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act) would give companies complete freedom to share your personal data with the US government. It doesn't *require* them to do so, but if the government asked it would be hard to say no, and they'd have no reason to-- CISPA would free them from any promises made to customers in public statements or privacy policies.

Your emails, your Facebook account, your bank statements, the websites you visit, your real-time location (courtesy of your cellphone company)-- all of it could soon belong to a slew of government agencies and even local police, who could use it against you without a warrant.

New Progressive Pope?

"Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, a 76-year-old Argentinean, was chosen as the first Latin American pope on Wednesday. He will lead the world's 1.2 billion Catholics as Pope Francis. While his selection may be historic, it may also mean more of the same when it comes to gay rights in the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis is a conservative who is anti-gay marriage and anti-gay adoption. He has described same-sex marriage as the work of the devil and a "destructive attack on God's plan." He has also said that gay adoption is a form of discrimination against children."*

What can the world expect to hear from the newly chosen Pope? Will it be more of the same, or will we hear some progressive ideas? Cenk Uygur explains what's in store with Pope Francis I.

Mike Frey on AIDS

A Minnesota resident Mike Frey speaking before the House Civil Law Committee offered a shockingly inaccurate testimony in an attempt to thwart the approval of same-sex marriage in the state.

Mike Frey, a "concerned" father and husband, spoke in front of the committee on Tuesday and cited Minnesota's sodomy law, struck down in 2001, which defined sodomy as both anal and oral sex. Mike Frey attempted to argue that gay sex poses a danger to citizens of the state because it results in the spread of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

The Young Turks video on Mike Frey

Mike Frey claimed that heterosexual sex could be safer because the vagina has a "barrier of cellular tissue that doesn't allow the sperm ... to penetrate the blood flow," but anal sex doesn't have such protections.

"When ejaculation occurs inside of a colon, it's highly absorbent material, the cells do not have a barrier for the sperm and those enzymes to enter into the blood flow," Mike Frey said. "When the enzymes enter into the blood flow, and a continued, prolonged environment of that happens, these enzymes in the blood flow, it causes what we know as AIDS."

Is Religion Outdated in the 21st century? Lawrence Krauss / Davos

While religions are the oldest institutions in the world, they are the slowest to respond to modern issues such as drugs, homosexuality and changing family relationships. As we move into the second decade of the 21st century, it is important to re-examine the place religion holds in the world today.

Lawrence Krauss speaks at: 9:00 45:30 56:20 1:00:00 1:05:30 1:08:20 1:12:20 1:17:00 1:30:40

Dimensions to be addressed:

Are we becoming a multi-faith society or one where many have no faith at all?
How are religious institutions helping instil tolerance and values in society?
How can we reconcile the trends in society’s evolution with religious beliefs?
How can we foster freedom of speech and at the same time religious freedom?

Listen to talkback from the viewers and the prist Ronny Marriott from First Baptist Church of Corpus Christ.

Ronny Marriott: "I hate to see it when groups use that freedom that we have of speach to put a negative message to spread what I believe to be lies".

Once again: The message on the billboards is "Don't believe in God? You are not alone". What the negative and lie is in that message, I think you have to be Christian to find.

When Bad Things Happen To Good People

Why do bad things happen to good people? This week, Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Founder of NJOP, discusses the important philosophical concept of theodicy which explores why the righteous suffer and the wicked flourish. Last weekend, we learned of the tragedy in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, when a young, Hasidic couple were killed in a car accident by a suspected drunk driver. Their baby, who was delivered via c-section soon after, died the next day. Why did God allow this to happen? We have to go to the story of Creation. When was evil introduced into the world? On the 6th day, God saw what he created and it was good. It was when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit that evil, pain and suffering were introduced to the world. God gave humans free will and it was they who brought in evil. But God also gave us an incredible gift. A gift to heal illnesses and to remove evil from the world. It is up to us.

So let's take this devastating story of the young lives cut short. We have the capacity to enforce laws better. Perhaps this convicted offender shouldn't have been allowed back on the streets. Perhaps cars that won't start if the driver is inebriated should be more widely available. Cars can be built safer. There is also technology to cure many serious illnesses. It is really a question of whether we are determined to do it. While we express our condolences to the families of the deceased, we need to also speak to ourselves and understand that the committment is ours to make. We must perfect the world. We have to work harder to eliminate the evil, injustices and illnesses. We can do better.
