Cherenkov Radiation

Sure, our atmosphere protects us from a horrible Universe that's trying to kill us, but sometimes it prevents us from learning stuff too. Case in point, the atmosphere blocks highly energetic particles from reaching our detectors. But there's a way astronomers can still detect their influence: Cherenkov Radiation; the cascade of radiation that blasts out as a high-energy particle makes its way through the atmosphere, like a radioactive rainshower.

1 Corinthians 13

The point of the video - the bible is as good a source of information on the topic of LOVE, as any ancient desert scribblings. Sure, taken on its own, 1 Cor 13:4-7 is very nice, but not as nice as other descriptions of love that human beings have come up with. And anyway - would you take advice about love from someone whose biography revealed them to be an appallingly UNLOVING character in the first place?

The bible demolishes itself as a useful source for anything, other than an anthropological study in the history of metaphysical wonderings, superstition, ignorance, and delusion. When you read the words on the pages of the bible, what you actually see is horror, fear, violence, anger, rage, jealousy (fuck it, I think jealousy is a pretty low emotion/characteristic), pettiness, death, fear, - the very worst of human nature.

Just because there are a couple of nice sentences scattered throughout it to doesn't make up for the bulk of it being so revolting.

Atheism as a Movement - Not Philosophy

David Silverman, President of the American Atheists, joins Media Mayhem to talk about the lack of separation of Church and State, Christianity trying to monopolize American society, and going into the lion's den of FOXNews.

David also illuminates us to the real reason that Bill O'Reilly famously called Christianity a "philosophy, not a religion," and why atheists have been let down by President Obama.

GUEST BIO:
David Silverman is President of American Atheists and was the Creator and Executive Producer of the Reason Rally. He attended Brandeis University, where he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science while honing his debating skills with theists in numerous informal debates. Dave served as a professional inventor at Bell Labs for 8 years (74 issued patents) and a Marketing Director for Natural Microsystems.

He has been an atheist since he was 6-years-old. Dave became an activist in 1996 and soon became New Jersey State Director. He also founded the Alliance of Lucent and AT&T Atheists and Secularists, the first employee club of its kind. He was tapped to be the National Spokesperson in 2004, and then was named Vice President in 2008. The Board of Directors elected Dave as President in September of 2010.

Appreciating the Essence of Food on Tu B'Shevat

Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of the National Jewish Outreach Program, wishes you a Happy New Year for the Trees. On Tu B'Shevat (15 Shevat), this year celebrated on January 26th, we celebrate the Trees. Tu B'Shevat marks the beginning of the spring.

The holiday is identified by the special grains, wheat and barley, and fruits, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates, which the land of Israel is known for. Rabbi Buchwald points out how intriguing it is to him that Judaism celebrates food. Not just that Jews enjoy eating, but the fact that Judaism gives special honor to these seven species. So much so, that they require special blessings at the end of a meal. This blessing is known as a bracha acharona, an abridged grace after meals. If you eat one of these seven items, you recite a special grace. There is even an order of importance to these seven items. For example, if we are eating more than one, we must know which item to eat first so that we make the proper blessing. Blessings in general are among the most complicated laws of Judaism. In fact, in Europe, when a town was looking for a new rabbi, they would test him by setting out exotic foods in front of the candidate and see if he would make the proper and correct number of blessings.

Food is important to us, not just for sustenance. It needs to be taken seriously. Tu B'Shevat helps us remember the essence of foods. For example, strawberries may be seen as a healthy snack, but then we see how fertilizers are used today to produce a crop. We may think they are healthy but what impact did they have on the environment? A pound of beef may require hundreds of pounds of grain to feed the cow. And what about the water and fertilizer to produce that grain? So we really should take our food seriously. This is what Tu B'Shevat reminds us. We are reminded that food is a gift from God. Learn about the essence of the foods and remember to bless God for every morsel that we eat.

Should Science Teachers Be Paid More Than Humanities Teachers?

Lawrence Krauss argues for differential pay scales for teachers with advanced training in science and math to accommodate the free market.

Transcript
I've thought a lot about public education and science because it's important to me that kids get exposure to some of the greatest ideas that humans have ever developed and just to enjoy them. I don't think there's one magic bullet to solving our problems of education, but there are a number of issues that I think are useful to consider.

One is we rely too much on teaching answers, on facts. What's interesting are the questions. The questions are what are natural. Every kid grows up asking where did I come from, where am I my going, you know, am I alone in the universe? These fascinating questions... but they don't realize that they are the questions that scientists ask. And so I would like to base a curriculum more on questions than answers because the process of asking the questions and figuring out how to address them is what science is all about.

The answers are not important because most kids won't necessarily become scientists, but the tools of science, of trying to explore the universe and distinguish sense from nonsense and take a complicated situation and simplify it enough to address it. And the fact that science addresses the most remarkable questions that are in each of us, are the things that we want to instill in children. So it would be great to develop a curriculum where we base it on the very questions that kids are interested in.

I often tell teachers, and it's true for car salesman or Web producers or everything else, that the biggest mistake any teacher makes is to assume their students are interested in what they're saying. Because if you are a teacher or a writer or anyone else, what you have to do is you have to go out to where they are and convince them that what you're talking about is relevant to what they're interested in. You have to seduce them, as I often say. And seducing them means recognizing that science is actually relevant to the things that they care about. It's not things rolling down in some inclined plane or boring stuff. It's, are we alone in the universe? Can we travel through time? All of those, you know, questions that people are fascinated by.

Now, the problem with this, of course, is that if teachers are going to teach it, they have to be comfortable enough with the material to be able to go off in different directions. And one of the big problems is our teachers aren't trained in science. I think, some number like close to 90 percent of middle school science teachers don't have a training in science, beyond the high school level.

Now if you're not comfortable with the material what you'll inevitably do is teach to the curriculum. You'll feel comfortable with the answers that are in the book and you'll teach to that. So we need to - the real problem, of course, is we need to do a better job of training teachers so that they can feel comfortable to go off in different directions. If they'll express a level of discomfort, that comes down to the students.

I remember when my daughter was just in grade two, I went in to her class and I saw that her teacher -- you know, there they were - what they were learning was that light during the day and dark at night. Trivial little bits of information about the universe. But the teacher was clearly uncomfortable with it. And I was sure that level of discomfort was coming through to the students.

So we have to do a much better job of training teachers. That means we have to build a better curriculum, which, of course, requires more emphasis at the university level. And the realization that when we're teaching students were not trying to make clones of ourselves. When we teach physics, we tend to think that the students - that the results really matter, that everyone needs to know how things will fall down inclined planes. I don't give a damn about that. I want students to realize the process of how to do it because most of them aren't going to become physicists, and it doesn't matter.

It's that process that will be useful to them later in life. Now, if we are going to spend more time and effort training teachers then in some sense we have to provide them a motivation to become teachers. And one of the things that I would argue, which I know is controversial, is that in some sense we have to consider the competitive environment the teachers find themselves in.

Seize The Day

The 1956 Saul Bellow novel, "Seize The Day," brought this catchy line into the public consciousness, and its message can be seen today in all manner of literature, film and pop culture.

But what does it mean? How should the non-believer (or any human being) approach each day? Is "Seize The Day" merely a romantic yet impractical charge more suited to fiction, or is it something that can be embraced as a philosophy for living?

In this (reflective and undoubtedly sentimental) show about birth, death and the moments in-between, we share your stories and philosophies for seizing the days.

Who is the One True God?

Six members of the Reason and Science Society (RSS) debate the defining question of our time - which is the One True God? Her Hornyness (it's a pun) the Invisible Pink Unicorn, or His, er, Noodlyness the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Who are truly blessed, and who are the heathenous infidels who are going to Hell?

Who is the One True God? The Invisible Pink Unicorn vs. Flying Spaghetti Monster debate (1 of 2)

Richard (reverent atheist and closet pirate)
Matthew (crazy animal rights activist and active in the field of research on the link between David Tenant and the Flying Spaghetti Monster as practiced and valued in sub-Saharan hunter-gatherer societies)
Scott (long time student and lover of linguine, fettuccine, penne and gnocchi)
George (evolutionist and pink ice sculptor)
Hannah (has pink hair and is allegedly a sexy bitch)
Ben (Christian and pink unicorn trainer)

With Megan as moderator who says hurtful things.

These master debaters tackle the difficult theological questions, such as the details of the afterlife and the famous Problem of Mel Gibson, a God awful shitty piss-poor actor whose very existence threatens to undermine the benevolence of God. This is not just a debate - this is answering, once and for all, Who we should all devote our lives to.

We always hear about the many amazing things that Jesus of Nazareth apparently did, but nobody ever asks about the things that Jesus supposedly COULD have done, being omnipotent, but either didn't bother to do or didn't think were all that important. You know, things like... reducing human misery and suffering... that kind of thing.

The God Delusion (movie)

The Root of All Evil?, later retitled The God Delusion, is a television documentary written and presented by Richard Dawkins in which he argues that humanity would be better off without religion or belief in God.

The documentary was first broadcast in January 2006, in the form of two 45-minute episodes (excluding advertisement breaks), on Channel 4 in the UK.

Dawkins has said that the title The Root of All Evil? was not his preferred choice, but that Channel 4 had insisted on it to create controversy. The sole concession from the producers on the title was the addition of the question mark. Dawkins has stated that the notion of anything being the root of all evil is ridiculous. Dawkins' book The God Delusion, released in September 2006, goes on to examine the topics raised in the documentary in greater detail. The documentary was rebroadcast on the More4 channel on the 25th August 2010 under the title of The God Delusion.

Penn Jillette's Bullshit Detector

According to atheist magician Penn Jillette, the most important thing is to feel about things you should feel about -- and think about things you should think about. You should not feel about the speed of light or evolution and you should not think about love. You should feel "I love you," you should think about reality.

Transcript

You know, my bullshit detector works first of all...if there's something you really want to believe, that's what you should question the most. I don't question bad news very much. I don't question things that go against what I believe very much. But boy, the stuff that I really want to believe, I really question a lot.

Now, I was taught -- I grew up as a Christian. I suppose at some level I wanted to believe someone was watching over me. But when I want to believe something, that's when I want to question it the most. That's when I have to be the most careful. And I feel a little bit disingenuous with that answer because I don't think I any longer want to believe in God. My friend, who I miss very much, Hitch, Christopher Hitchens, said that wanting there to be a god was like wanting to live in North Korea, to give away all of your freedom. And for someone who loves freedom and loves people, I don't think you should hope for God at all.

So I guess my detector on God is that whenever someone uses what they feel as evidence instead of what they think as evidence or what they can prove as evidence, I'm very, very skeptical. The most important thing is to feel about things you feel about -- should feel about -- and think about things you should think about. You should not feel about the speed of light or evolution and you should not think about love. You should feel "I love you," you should think about reality. And when someone says they feel the universe was created by a God, that's nonsense, just like saying, you know, "I've thought about it and maybe I should love you." Don't mix those two.

And a lot of people seem to think that -- that feeling cheapens the science, that if you feel something it cheapens it. And there's not enough said about how it cheapens the emotion. You know, if you're spending your time feeling that the earth was created, instead of... by intelligent design, you should be spending your time feeling love, feeling compassion, feeling generosity and loyalty and all the stuff you should feel in your heart. Even anger, even disappointment. But that doesn't change the world. You should think about the world and feel about your heart.

Godless: The Congregations

Godless takes a compelling look at a growing subculture with no faith or belief in a god and finds many surprising ways in which non-believers are emulating the structures and practices of organized religion: holding services, teaching non-supernatural interpretations of religious texts, proselytizing and even risking their lives for the freedom to express non-belief.

Congregating or spreading the word for a god makes some sense, but why be so active a non-believer, spreading the word of nothing? This two-part documentary explores the many motivations of the godless and asks: IS ATHEISM THE NEXT GREAT RELIGION?

Part 1: The Congregations

Our look at the subculture of the godless starts in a group therapy session for people recovering from religion where attendees range from those traumatized by their religious upbringing to others who discovered they could no longer believe in a supernatural god. From there, its off to synagogue and church, an openly atheistic church whose congregations don't pray to god. Indeed they don't recognize God, certainly not God as an almighty, supernatural creator of the universe or anything that actually lives. But these congregations do hold services and Sunday schools and even summer camps. What doctrines are they following? Are any relying on big-name new atheists like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens and Daniel Dennett as doctrine? And are these faithless indoctrinating their children into Atheism?
Find Out.

Part 2: Spreading the Word

In the second part of Godless, we look at the increasing efforts of "new atheists" and other secularists and non-believers to "proselytize". Featuring more from the new atheists known as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens and Daniel Dennett) plus grass roots campaigns including everything from comedy acts and de-baptisms to more serious bus campaigns, we ask: are atheists spreading the word or just preaching to the converted? We also hear from atheists who have faced discrimination and even death threats as a consequence of their non-belief, begging the question why do all this for non-belief? Atheists are described as the least trusted group in the US less so than Muslims, despite all their bad press. Is this inevitable or avoidable when you are putting people's faith on public trial? Viewers will decide that for themselves.

Is God a Mathematician?

Michio Kaku says that God could be a mathematician: "The mind of God we believe is cosmic music, the music of strings resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace. That is the mind of God."

Transcript--
Some people ask the question "Of what good is math?" What is the relationship between math and physics? Well, sometimes math leads. Sometimes physics leads. Sometimes they come together because, of course, there's a use for the mathematics. For example, in the 1600s Isaac Newton asked a simple question: if an apple falls then does the moon also fall? That is perhaps one of the greatest questions ever asked by a member of Homo sapiens since the six million years since we parted ways with the apes. If an apple falls, does the moon also fall?

Isaac Newton said yes, the moon falls because of the Inverse Square Law. So does an apple. He had a unified theory of the heavens, but he didn't have the mathematics to solve the falling moon problem. So what did he do? He invented calculus. So calculus is a direct consequence of solving the falling moon problem. In fact, when you learn calculus for the first time, what is the first thing you do? The first thing you do with calculus is you calculate the motion of falling bodies, which is exactly how Newton calculated the falling moon, which opened up celestial mechanics.

So here is a situation where math and physics were almost conjoined like Siamese twins, born together for a very practical question, how do you calculate the motion of celestial bodies? Then here comes Einstein asking a different question and that is, what is the nature and origin of gravity? Einstein said that gravity is nothing but the byproduct of curved space. So why am I sitting in this chair? A normal person would say I'm sitting in this chair because gravity pulls me to the ground, but Einstein said no, no, no, there is no such thing as gravitational pull; the earth has curved the space over my head and around my body, so space is pushing me into my chair. So to summarize Einstein's theory, gravity does not pull; space pushes. But, you see, the pushing of the fabric of space and time requires differential calculus. That is the language of curved surfaces, differential calculus, which you learn in fourth year calculus.

So again, here is a situation where math and physics were very closely combined, but this time math came first. The theory of curved surfaces came first. Einstein took that theory of curved surfaces and then imported it into physics.

Now we have string theory. It turns out that 100 years ago math and physics parted ways. In fact, when Einstein proposed special relativity in 1905, that was also around the time of the birth of topology, the topology of hyper-dimensional objects, spheres in 10, 11, 12, 26, whatever dimension you want, so physics and mathematics parted ways. Math went into hyperspace and mathematicians said to themselves, aha, finally we have found an area of mathematics that has no physical application whatsoever. Mathematicians pride themselves on being useless. They love being useless. It's a badge of courage being useless, and they said the most useless thing of all is a theory of differential topology and higher dimensions.

Well, physics plotted along for many decades. We worked out atomic bombs. We worked out stars. We worked out laser beams, but recently we discovered string theory, and string theory exists in 10 and 11 dimensional hyperspace. Not only that, but these dimensions are super. They're super symmetric. A new kind of numbers that mathematicians never talked about evolved within string theory. That's how we call it "super string theory." Well, the mathematicians were floored. They were shocked because all of a sudden out of physics came new mathematics, super numbers, super topology, super differential geometry.

All of a sudden we had super symmetric theories coming out of physics that then revolutionized mathematics, and so the goal of physics we believe is to find an equation perhaps no more than one inch long which will allow us to unify all the forces of nature and allow us to read the mind of God. And what is the key to that one inch equation? Super symmetry, a symmetry that comes out of physics, not mathematics, and has shocked the world of mathematics. But you see, all this is pure mathematics and so the final resolution could be that God is a mathematician. And when you read the mind of God, we actually have a candidate for the mind of God. The mind of God we believe is cosmic music, the music of strings resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace. That is the mind of God.
