My "Coming Out" Letter

Many who have come out of religious families and cultures formally announced their rejection of superstition by writing letters/emails to their families and friends.

The letters weren't necessary written because these apostates were unwilling to say the words in person, but quite often they provide a comprehensive, detailed, measured and permenant record of such an important decision.

In this episode, our listeners are welcome to share the "Coming Out as an Atheist" letters with us (ommitting any elements too personal, of course). Callers may read their letters, or send them in email form (with any elaboration and backstory needed) to thethinkingatheist.com.

For time, longer letters may be abridged for broadcast, but we'll take every care to maintain the integrity of the piece.

Bill Nye: Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children

Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. According to Bill Nye, aka "The Science Guy," if grownups want to "deny evolution and live in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them."

Transcript-
Denial of evolution is unique to the United States. I mean, we're the world's most advanced technological—I mean, you could say Japan—but generally, the United States is where most of the innovations still happens. People still move to the United States. And that's largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science. When you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in that, it holds everybody back, really.

Evolution is the fundamental idea in all of life science, in all of biology. It's like, it's very much analogous to trying to do geology without believing in tectonic plates. You're just not going to get the right answer. Your whole world is just going to be a mystery instead of an exciting place.

As my old professor, Carl Sagan, said, "When you're in love you want to tell the world." So, once in a while I get people that really—or that claim—they don't believe in evolution. And my response generally is "Well, why not? Really, why not?" Your world just becomes fantastically complicated when you don't believe in evolution. I mean, here are these ancient dinosaur bones or fossils, here is radioactivity, here are distant stars that are just like our star but they're at a different point in their lifecycle. The idea of deep time, of this billions of years, explains so much of the world around us. If you try to ignore that, your world view just becomes crazy, just untenable, itself inconsistent.

And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that's completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that's fine, but don't make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need people that can—we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.

It's just really hard a thing, it's really a hard thing. You know, in another couple of centuries that world view, I'm sure, will be, it just won't exist. There's no evidence for it.

Searching for Meaning in a Secular Age

Host Harry Kreisler welcomes philosophy professors Hubert Dreyfus and Sean Kelly to discuss their book, "All Things Shining." Drawing on their reading of Western classics, Dreyfus and Kelly analyze how different epochs offered unique answers to the question of what is sacred and what can provide meaning for human existence. They explore the examples of Homer, Jesus, and Melville to highlight differing paradigms of culture practice. Dreyfus and Kelly then trace the transition to the secular age in which nihilism prevails. They conclude by identifying how a sense of meaning emerges from heroism, athletics, and craftsmanship.

Discovering Ardi

Following publication in October, 2009 of multiple papers on the discovery and study of a 4.4 million-year-old female partial skeleton nicknamed "Ardi" in the journal Science, Discovery Channel presented a world premiere special that documented the sustained, intensive investigation leading up to this landmark publication of the Ardipithecus ramidus fossils.

The scientific investigation began in the Ethiopian desert 17 years ago, and now opens a new chapter on human evolution, revealing the first evolutionary steps our ancestors took after we diverged from a common ancestor we once shared with living chimpanzees. "Ardi's" centerpiece skeleton, the other hominids she lived with, and the rocks, soils, plants and animals that made up her world were analyzed in laboratories around the world, and the scientists have now published their findings in the prestigious journal Science.

"Ardi" is now the oldest skeleton from our (hominid) branch of the primate family tree. These Ethiopian discoveries reveal an early grade of human evolution in Africa that predated the famous Australopithecus nicknamed "Lucy." Ardipithecus was a woodland creature with a small brain, long arms, and short legs. The pelvis and feet show a primitive form of two-legged walking on the ground, but Ardipithecus was also a capable tree climber, with long fingers and big toes that allowed their feet to grasp like an ape's. The discoveries answer old questions about how hominids became bipedal.

A World Full of "Woo"

The Skeptic's Dictionary defines "Woo" (or "Woo Woo") as: ideas considered irrational or based on extremely flimsy evidence or that appeal to mysterious occult forces or powers.

"Woo" is concerned with emotions, mysticism, or spiritualism; other than rational or scientific. It often takes legitimate scientific theories or concepts and spins them into thick, often spiritual assertions about the world and universe. Sometimes it's just a nonsense claim with zero evidence and zero credibility. And it's everywhere.

The Sanctity of Israel

NJOP's Director Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald just returned home from a delightful trip to Israel and wants to share his enthusiasm with you. Rabbi Buchwald tells us about an email her recently received from a distinguished rabbi about the sanctity of the land of Israel and how unfortunately the people of Israel are not always so sanctified themselves. Rabbi Buchwald disagrees with this thought. He goes on to explain that even the secular Jews in Israel feel a connection to the land and traditions.

Close to 70% of the Jews in Israel light Shabbat candles and make kiddush over wine on Friday night and fast on Yom Kippur.

Chanukah is observed by close to 85% 76% of the homes in Israel keep kosher.

90% have a mezuzah on their front door.

Where outside of Israel do you see such a percentage? Whatever you say about the land of Israel, remember that Israel is the Holy Land and will always remain the Holy Land. May God Bless the land of Israel.

Mark Twain on The Book Of Mormon

Mark Twain read The Book Of Mormon and wrote this

Mark Twain on the Mormon Bible - part 1

Mark Twain on the Mormon Bible - part 2

All men have heard of the Mormon Bible, but few except the ‘elect’ have seen it, or, at least, taken the trouble to read it. I brought away a copy from Salt Lake. The book is a curiosity to me, it is such a pretentious affair, and yet so ‘slow,’ so sleepy; such an insipid mess of inspiration. It is chloroform in print. If Joseph Smith composed this book, the act was a miracle — keeping awake while he did it was, at any rate. If he, according to tradition, merely translated it from certain ancient and mysteriously-engraved plates of copper, which he declares he found under a stone, in an out-of-the-way locality, the work of translating was equally a miracle, for the same reason.

"The book seems to be merely a prosy detail of imaginary history, with the Old Testament for a model; followed by a tedious plagiarism of the New Testament. The author labored to give his words and phrases the quaint, old-fashioned sound and structure of our King James’s translation of the Scriptures; and the result is a mongrel — half modern glibness, and half ancient simplicity and gravity. The latter is awkward and constrained; the former natural, but grotesque by the contrast. Whenever he found his speech growing too modern — which was about every sentence or two — he ladled in a few such Scriptural phrases as ‘exceeding sore,’ ‘and it came to pass,’ etc., and made things satisfactory again. ‘And it came to pass’ was his pet. If he had left that out, his Bible would have been only a pamphlet.

One of 13 children, Nate ultimately broke away from his father's extreme Calvanist teaching (and the emotional and physical abuse he asserts was prevalent in the Phelps home) at the age of eighteen. Dave Silverman: Atheism Is Simply Reasonable

American Atheists, Presidential Billboard Press Conference, 8-13-2012.

From American Atheists:

It seems there is some confusion as to our intentions with this billboard campaign. Our goal is to point out the silliness of religion in politics. We think the future of the United States is serious business, and its leadership should not be based upon the influences of religion in our political system.

Take Rep. Paul Ryan's comments, for example. Ryan stated, "Our rights come from nature and god, NOT from government." Is this the type of leadership we need in our country? How does he choose which god? What would our rights be under Ryan's god?

The Bible doesn't give equal rights to women, gays, or those who are not a part of their tribe. The Bible promotes theocracy, not democracy. There isn't a system of checks and balances, trial by jury, or even racial equality in the Bible. Is this what we want? NO! We are a pluralistic nation. Our intention with these billboards is to show the absolute foolishness of allowing religion to be the litmus test of our policies and government.

The framers of the Constitution knew this very well, which is why they ignored their own religious beliefs to create a secular document devoid of religion. At American Atheists, we take a bold stand for equal rights, as we work to protect the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution."

Christianity: Bring Your Own Reason, as long as it proves itself

NonStampCollector found this podcast "Freedom Over The Clay" on iTunes whilst searching for Bart Ehrman. Naturally NonStampCollector disagreed with a lot of what they said, but it was only in this section, towards the end, that they really specificaly outlined just how circular their reasoning was.

NonStampCollector was amazed - the reason that they're right and the Catholic and the Agnostic were wrong, is that the basis for "correct" Christian view is actually the basis for truth itself, so how could anything else be true? Becuase it can't be true, because it isn't based in the basis of truth, which is, by definition, the Christian view! Fuck me. An eight-year-old would be able to see through this shit.

Golden Crocoduck nominees 2012 (Part 2)

Two more Golden Crocoduck nominees -- ppsimmons and BT3701. You'll find them in the Golden Crocoduck nominees 2012 playlist. Voting will be at the end of September.

Regarding comments in the forum of this video, a lot of people maintain that BT3701's video "Hitler promotes Darwinism" is satire. However, the label "satire" was only added to his video title after the translation was questioned by myself and others. Satire at least has to be mildly humorous, poke fun, and be obviously satirical. If people are fooled into thinking the mistranslation is an actual rendering of what Hitler said, then as a satire it fails, it is simply a misquote. On top of that, if BT3701 is messaged by creationiosts who believe it to be an accurate quote and he encourages this rather than corrects them, then he cannot dress up this deception as "satire." I think we should all be able to tell the difference. If I caption a speech by the Pope with the mistranslation: "Contraception's a sin because we need more kids for priests to fondle," it would be obviously satire. If I translate the speech as "Contraception is a sin because without souls God's Church would die," it is not humorous, and feasible enough to be believable. Yet the implication would be that the Pope is against contraception because more poor, uneducated Catholics means more power for the Catholic Church, and this 'satire' would then spread around the Internet as a real quote. Now that BT3701 has come clean and written 'satire' at the top of his video, it is a start. However, that is not enough to be dropped as a coveted Golden Crocoduck nominee. He needs to explain that the satire is in the mistranslation, because it is so unfunny that it is not at all obvious.

By the way, I notice that even in the comments section BT3701 continues to misquote Hitler, with no intent to be satirical. He claims Hitler said "Our epoch in the next 200 years will certainly see the end of the disease of Christianity" without giving a source. I checked the source, which is a set of notes by two of Hitler's adjutants. According to the notes, which may or may not be accurate, Hitler said something completely different: "Die Zeit, inder wir leben, ist die Erscheinung des Zusammenbruchs dieser Sache. Es kann 100 oder 200 Jahre noch dauern."

Mark Henderson - The Geek Manifesto - Skeptics In The Pub

The Geek Manifesto. Why science matter
19th July 2012
The Head of Steam, Liverpool

There are 650 MPs in the House of Commons. 158 have a background in business, 90 have been political advisers or organisers, and 86 are lawyers. Only one of them is a scientist. Is it any wonder that politics so often lets science down, and fails to exploit its skeptical methods to design policies that are fit for purpose?

In the Geek Manifesto, published by Bantam Press in May 2012, Mark Henderson explores this disconnect between science and politics, and charts the emergence of a new force that is promising to mend it. From the Simon Singh libel case to the sacking of David Nutt and the Science is Vital campaign, people who care about science are starting to stand up to be counted. The geeks are coming — and our country needs us.

Mark Henderson is ex Science Editor of The Times, and current Head of Communications at The Wellcome Trust.

The Olympic Spirit and Judaism

Rabbi Buchwald shares his pride in the United States Women's Gymnastics team for taking home the Gold Medal in London. This was partly due to the contributions of Aly Raisman*, a Jewish team member from Newton, Massachusetts. Not only did she score high in multiple events, but her floor routine was performed to Hava Nagila, the long beloved Jewish tune.

Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald explains how his pride in Aly's performance connects to the Chanukah holiday. During Chanukah we celebrate the victory of the Maccabees over the Hellenists whose goal was to make the Jewish people more Greek. A good part of their culture involved physical activities, like gymnastics, wrestling and building one's body. We fought them off back then to maintain our Jewish identity. Yet today we take pride in our Israeli team and all the Jewish Olympians. Rabbi Buchwald shares his hope that the Olympic spirit pervades the world and brings a fellowship where the competition will be in brotherhood and good taste. May this Olympic spirit bring an end to enmity among the nations and hopefully we will have peace.

*Aly Raisman also competed in the gymnastics all-around event on Thursday, August 2nd and place 4th behind her US teammate Gabrielle Douglas (Gold) and two Russian gymnasts.
