Alcoholics Anonymous is a religion

The Twelve Steps

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

GNOSIS "The Lost Gospels"- Peter Owen Jones

Documentary presented by Anglican priest Pete Owen Jones which explores the huge number of ancient Christian texts that didn't make it into the New Testament.

Pete travels through Egypt and the former Roman Empire looking at the emerging evidence of a Christian world that's very different to the one we know, and discovers that aside from the gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John, there were over seventy gospels, acts, letters and apocalypses, all circulating in the early Church.
Through these lost Gospels, Pete reconstructs the intense intellectual and political struggles for orthodoxy that was fought in the early centuries of Christianity, a battle involving different Christian sects, each convinced that their gospels were true and sacred.

In1945. Three hundred miles south of Cairo is a place of deserts and caves called Nag Hammadi. Egyptian farmhands searching for a type of fertile soil find a skeleton, and with it a sealed jar. At first they do not open the jar because they fear it might contain an evil Jinn. But the lure of gold tempts them. When they break open the jar they find not gold, but thirteen leather bound papyrus codices. How these then survive is itself a minor miracle (no pun intended) since the farmhands rip up the texts to divide them amongst themselves, some are discarded in a back yard and some of these dusty old papers are designated as kindling. But in the main they do survive. These are the Nag Hammadi texts, and they contain more than fifty early Christian texts, written in Coptic and dating from the 3rd or 4th century AD. They now reside at the Coptic Museum, Cairo. They include the almost complete Gospel of Thomas, which is not a narrative but a list of 114 sayings of Jesus, at least half previously unknown, many decidedly cryptic, The Sophia ("wisdom") of Jesus (an important Gnostic concept is "Sophia"), and The Gospel of Philip. It is The Gospel of Philip which causes the most controversy, because it suggests that Jesus had a very close (though not necessarily sexual) relationship with Mary Magdalene. Tantalisingly some words have been destroyed, but the usual translations of the key parts are as follows:
"There were three who always walked with the Lord: Mary, his mother, and her sister, and Magdalene, the one who was called his companion. His sister and his mother and his companion were each a Mary.

And the companion of [the saviour was Mar]y Ma[gda]lene. [Christ loved] M[ary] more than [all] the disci[ples, and used to] kiss her [often] on her [mouth]. The rest of [the disciples were offended by it and expressed disapproval]. They said to him "Why do you love her more than all of us?" The Saviour answered and said to them, "Why do I not love you like her? When a blind man and one who sees are both together in darkness, they are no different from one another. When the light comes, then he who sees will see the light, and he who is blind will remain in darkness."

The worldwide success of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code sparked new interest, as well as wild and misguided speculation about the origins of the Christian faith. Owen Jones sets out the context in which heretical texts like the Gospel of Mary emerged. He also strikes a cautionary note - if these lost gospels had been allowed to flourish, Christianity may well have faced an uncertain future, or perhaps not survived at all.

Noah's Ark (animated)

The bible story, Noah's Ark (part 1 of 2)

A few mistakes:
I said the references to unicorns are made in Numbers 22 and 24. It is actually 23 and 24. In fact, it's Numbers 23:22, I got my numbers muddled. (and 24:8).
I called it "AnswersInGensis.com" when it's actually .org. However, .com will redirect you to the .org url, so let's just assume that back in 4000BC, they didn't have .org urls.

In the script, I have Noah say that Answers in Genesis is claiming that bringing only 16,000 pairs of animals will be enough. Actually, the AiG claim is somewhat ambiguous, as it could be taken to mean only 16,000 animals, not pairs of animals. I've decided to go the generous route, in citing them as claiming 16,000 pairs, rather than 8,000 pairs. If an AiG-inclined person would like to dispute my interpretation of this, and insist that AiG is claiming that 8,000 pairs were enough, they're welcome to do so.

In the age of the brand, logos are everywhere. But why do some of the world's best-known brands find themselves on the wrong end of the spray paint can -- the targets of anti-corporate campaigns by activists and protesters?

No Logo, based on the best-selling book by Canadian journalist and activist Naomi Klein, reveals the reasons behind the backlash against the increasing economic and cultural reach of multinational companies. Analyzing how brands like Nike, The Gap, and Tommy Hilfiger became revered symbols worldwide, Klein argues that globalization is a process whereby corporations discovered that profits lay not in making products (outsourced to low-wage workers in developing countries), but in creating branded identities people adopt in their lifestyles.

Own the taboo-shattering documentary that Newsweek says "irreverently lays out the case that Jesus Christ never existed." In this critically acclaimed film, you will discover:

* The early founders of Christianity seem wholly unaware of the idea of a human Jesus
* The Jesus of the Gospels bears a striking resemblance to other ancient heroes and the figureheads of pagan savior cults
* Contemporary Christians are largely ignorant of the origins of their religion
* Fundamentalism is as strong today as it ever has been, with an alarming 44% of Americans believing that Jesus will return to earth in their lifetimes.

From exposing the hidden history of Christianity to lampooning the bloody excesses of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ (which caused Gibson to attempt legal action against the documentary), The God Who Wasn't There pulls no punches.

ThetaHealing - Faith Healers

Jenny Johnstone works for ThetaHealing, a group of faith healers who claim to be able to cure cancer.

Newsnight sent an undercover researcher, who said she had been diagnosed with cervical cancer, to Warrington to ask the practitioner what ThetaHealing could do for her.

Aired on BBC2, 22 June 2011

When Newsnight contacted Ms Johnstone after the meeting, she refused to answer any questions. She still insists she has healed a baby's stomach cancer, but said there was no point trying to prove it because the BBC would not believe her anyway.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/newsnight/9519657.stm

A group of faith healers who claim they have miracle cures for cancer and HIV have been condemned as "irresponsible, even criminal" by a professor of complementary medicine, following a BBC Newsnight investigation.

The group of healers, collectively known as ThetaHealing, claim that their technique - which focuses on thought and prayer - can teach people to use their natural intuition and "brain wave cycle" to "create instantaneous physical and emotional healing."

ThetaHealing have about 600 practitioners in the UK who charge up to £100 per session.

But the healers' claims have been called "criminal" and "not supported by any kind of evidence" by Edzard Ernst, Professor of Complementary Medicine at the University of Exeter, whose unit not only carry out their own studies but also assess those done by other researchers.

Newsnight recorded Warrington-based ThetaHealing practitioner Jenny Johnstone - who charges £30 for a telephone call or £400 for a course - making a number of claims about the technique, including:

"There was a baby I worked on over the telephone and from one day to the next the cancer in his stomach had just disappeared."

Professor Ernst says such claims are "irresponsible, even criminal".

He believes that the ThetaHealing group try to distinguish themselves from the other 20,000 faith healers in the UK by applying a "veneer of science", but says "it's still nonsense".

Repeated clinical trials appear to show that although such faith healing might make people feel better, it does not cure disease. Professor Ernst conducted one such trial which pitched faith healers against actors pretending to be faith healers and found the actors performed better than the healers.

One former client of ThetaHealing - who did not wish to be identified - told the BBC that he was "angry and embarrassed" that he had wasted £1,200 on their healing and missed two years of proper medical treatment.

"There was never any suggestion I should go back to my doctor, which is what I needed to do," he told us.

On ThetaHealing's website it says that Vianna Stibal, the American founder of the group, "facilitated her own instant healing from cancer in 1995".

It also says that Ms Stibal conducts seminars around the world to teach people about ThetaHealing, and that she has trained teachers and practitioners who are now working in 14 countries.

Earlier this month, Ms Stibal visited the UK to address a meeting at the London School of Economics (LSE).

At the meeting Ms Stibal responded to a question from an audience member who asked if it was possible for ThetaHealing to make an amputated leg grow back:

"I believe it's possible to grow it back... a lady grew back her ovary... you can grow back a leg. I've seen people grow back," she told attendees.

Some of the 100 people who attended the event told a BBC researcher that they were reassured about the legitimacy of the group by the fact that the meeting was being held at the LSE.

The LSE told Newsnight that ThetaHealing's meeting was a "normal commercial booking".

Further remarks made by Vianna Stibal at the London meeting, whereby she claimed that ThetaHealing could effectively reduce HIV to undetectable levels, have also alarmed Aids charity the Terrence Higgins Trust.

"The fact is we've seen charlatans of this kind all the way through the HIV epidemic," Lisa Power of the Trust told Newsnight. "Those charlatans are more dangerous than ever now that we have effective treatment."

Ms Power worries that some patients could put their lives at risk by delaying taking effective anti-retroviral drugs in favour of pursuing faith healing.

Both Vianna Stibal and Jenny Johnstone refused to answer questions from Newsnight. Ms Johnstone still insists she has healed a baby's stomach cancer, but said there was no point in her trying to prove it because the BBC would not believe her anyway.

Power Balance Admits To Scam

Importers and profiteers of the offensively implausible and opportunistic wrist band scam known as "Power Balance" have, "acknowledged it [Power Balance Australia] had breached the code and said the relevant claims [of increased athletic performance] had been removed from its website", under pressure from The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Whilst this is only one brand of rip off it is indeed the most vocal - hence offensive.

ACCC chairman Graeme Samuel said in a statement: "Power Balance has admitted that there is no credible scientific basis for the claims and therefore no reasonable grounds for making representations about the benefits of the product.

"Its conduct may have contravened the misleading and deceptive conduction section of the Trade Practices Act 1974," Mr Samuel said.

Militant Atheism - Radio Podcast

When a mealtime prayer is disrupted by an atheist who considers it insulting, has he established necessary boundaries of respect, or has he alienated himself from those he seeks to influence?

When an atheist activist greets parishoners with shouts and picket signs on the front lawn of a church, is he effectively making his case against the influence of superstition, or is he branding the entire movement as disruptive and inflammatory?

When a lawsuit is filed over a nativity scene on public property or a prayer at a city hall meeting, is it a beneficial fight to preserve church/state separation, or is it a distraction from more important issues?

These are difficult questions, and no doubt there are many times when a confrontation is appropriate. But is militant atheism a help or a hindrance as we work to rescue our communities and culture from the influence of religion?

The 'Life of Brian' Debate (1979)

Shortly after the film was released, Cleese and Palin engaged in a what would become an infamous debate on the BBC2 discussion programme Friday Night, Saturday Morning, in which Malcolm Muggeridge and Mervyn Stockwood, the Bishop of Southwark, put the case against the film.

Muggeridge and the Bishop had arrived 15 minutes late to see a screening of the picture prior to the debate, missing the establishing scenes which demonstrated that Brian and Jesus were two different characters, and hence contended that it was a send-up of Christ himself.

Both Pythons later felt that there had been a strange role reversal in the manner of the debate, with two young upstart comedians attempting to make serious, well-researched points, while the establishment figures engaged in cheap jibes and point scoring.

Darwin: Endless Forms Most Beautiful

"Darwin: Endless Forms Most Beautifu"l is a new multi-media theatre/music work that explores the life and ideas of Charles Darwin, his theory of evolution, and the conflict between science and belief. Darwin: Endless Forms Most Beautiful examines where Darwin's theory may be leading us in terms of bio- and cyber-technology. Developed in a creative development laboratory setting, in conjunction with a student ensemble of seven singer/actors and six instrumentalists, the piece showcases an experimental scenography that features video and projection.

Ralph Denzer is a composer and multi-instrumentalist who has been working in the New York city alternative theatre scene for several decades. His work has been performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and many other venues throughout New York city, in other parts of the U.S. and Canada, and in Finland, Denmark, Poland and Germany. He has received numerous grants from various funding organizations, and has written for dance, puppetry, film, video, TV commercials and radio plays. He moved to Montreal in 2008, where he is pursuing his Masters degree at Concordia University. In 2011, as part of his thesis work at Concordia, he collaborated with playwright Ryan Hurl and veteran music/theatre director Keith Turnbull to create a new work of music/theatre, Darwin: Endless Forms Most Beautiful, which used 7 actor/singers, a 6 piece instrumental ensemble, and live image projections.

William Lobdell Slams Benny Hinn, Faith Healers

William Lobdell criticizes Christian faith healers such as Trinity Broadcast Network star Benny Hinn, who he calls a "charlatan," and wonders why other mainstream pastors on TBN do not condemn Hinn. "Where's the courage within Christianity?" he asks.

William Lobdell's journey of faith -- and doubt -- may be the most compelling spiritual memoir of our time. Lobdell became a born-again Christian in his late 20s when personal problems drove him to his knees in prayer.

Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2009/03/25/Losing_Religion_William_Lobdell

As a newly minted evangelical, Lobdell -- a veteran journalist -- noticed that religion wasn't covered well in the mainstream media, and he prayed for the Lord to put him on the religion beat at a major newspaper. In 1998, his prayers were answered when the Los Angeles Times asked him to write about faith.

Yet what happened over the next eight years was a roller-coaster of inspiration, confusion, doubt, and soul-searching as his reporting and experiences slowly chipped away at his faith. He explored every doubt, every question -- until, finally, his faith collapsed. - Kepler's Books

William Lobdell has been a journalist for 25 years, winning scores of state and national awards. In 1998, he was assigned to the religion beat for the Los Angeles Times. During his eight years covering faith, he was a finalist for national religion writer of the year in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He left the religion beat when he lost his faith, in 2007.

Praying for America, A Fourth of July Message from Rabbi Buchwald

In honor of the upcoming 4th of July holiday, Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald, Director of Jewish Treats parent organization, the National Jewish Outreach Program, remembers a great US patriot by the name of James Forrestal.

In May of 1949, James Forrestal died. You may be asking yourself, who was James Forrestal? He was the last Cabinet level Secretary of the Navy and the first Cabinet level Secretary of Defense for the United States. In fact, the United States Navy's first Supercarrier was named for him because he was a great patriot and very devoted to the American people.

In May of 1949 when Forresetal died, Rabbi Buchwald was 4-years-old. When he heard that a great patriot died and saw that people were putting out there flags. He ran and grabbed one of the flags in their home, an Israeli flag, and put it outside. When his father came home and saw the flag outside, he wasn't happy. He knew if he said that James Forrestal the Secretary of Defense died, his father wouldn't understand. So he told his father, Dr. Theodore Hertzl, the founder of Zionism died. Hertzl had died 50 years earlier. Rabbi Buchwald father was an immigrant to the United States and always felt beholden to the US and it's government because it was kind and benevolent. They used to hang the flags often. We learn in Pirket Avot (Ethics of our Fathers) "that Jewish people should pray for the security of the government." Without government we'd eat each other alive. The US government is a "Malchut Shel Chesed" a kingdom of loving kindness. It has been a gracious and benevolent kingdom for the Jewish people and therefore we should pray for it. Pray for the security of the government. Pray for the security of the President. Pray for the people of America. Pray for peace.

We at Jewish Treats and the National Jewish Outreach Program wish you and all of our fellow Americans a happy, healthy and safe Fourth of July!

First cause argument for God

If everything has a cause, then God does, too, and there is no first cause. And if something doesn't have a cause, it might as well be the phsical world as a God or a tortoise.

If someone who asserts that God is the uncaused first cause (and then preens as if he's really explained something), we should thus inquire, "Why cannot the physical world itself be taken to be the uncaused first cause? After all, the neverable principle of Occam's razor advises us to 'shave off' unnecessary assumptions, and taking the world itself as the uncaused first cause has the great virtue of not introducing the unnecessary hypothesis of God
