Harry Jackson: Martin Luther King Would Oppose Gay Marriage

Harry Jackson says Martin Luther King would side with the Religious Right in opposing marriage equality.

Harry Jackson: There were members of his family who were for gay marriage, others were against. I know this: King basically spoke from two vantage points that he thought were very, very sacred within the American culture - one was the Bible and the other was the Constitution. And I think what we're dealing with here is that from a biblical perspective, King no doubt would have been with us biblically. And I think, again, the lines of what is exactly the right of an American to do, I've got a hard time believing that "the pursuit of happiness" crosses into some of these areas. So I think that King would be with us, as a preacher first.

Question: Just to clarify: you're saying Dr. King would be against gay marriage?

Harry Jackson: Yes. Very specifically, yes. Because it's against what is clearly written in Scripture. And if you listen to any of his messages, that clarion call to scriptural accountability even to the point when his own house was firebombed and folks came up in Montgomery armed and ready to go fight folks, he said "no, no, no, we will turn the other cheek."

So there was not just a tacit biblical acceptance or kind of whitewashing, if I can use that phrase, certain kinds of behaviors and say this is Christian, this is not. I think there was an inherent commitment to those issues in our social culture.

Misquoting Jesus a Talk By Bart Ehrman

Misquoting Jesus. Scribes who altered scripture and readers who may never know.

Stanford University's Office for Religious Life. Heynes Lecture Series. Presents: World-renowned Bible scholor and author Dr. Bart D. Ehrman.

April 25, 2007

Jesus, Interrupted by Bart D Ehrman

The problems with the Bible-that New Testament scholar Bart Ehrman discussed in his New York Times bestseller Misquoting Jesus-are expanded exponentially in his new book JESUS, INTERRUPTED. Here we find not only that Christian scribes altered the texts of their sacred Scripture, but also that the books of Scripture themselves, in their original forms, are often completely at odds with one another on such key issues as:

• Who Jesus was and how salvation works
• Why the New Testament contains books that were forged in the names of the apostles by Christians living decades later
• Did Paul, Matthew, John, and Jesus represent different religions?
• How standard Christian doctrines were the inventions of still later theologians

These are not idiosyncratic perspectives of just one modern scholar: as Ehrman skillfully demonstrates, they have been the standard and widespread views of critical scholars for over a century. Why is it that most people have never heard such things? As Ehrman argues, it is because scholars have failed to communicate their findings with the general public, and because pastors who learn this information when studying for the ministry have chosen not to share it with the people in the pews

Rapture on May 21st 2011

Believing that it's going to happen at any time is no less ridiculous than believing that it's going to happen on May 21.

NO AUDIO.

That's me in the picture, in USA, in March. I debated a few of these guys, and thought of what I should have said long afterwards: which is basically what I wrote here. That small voice of doubt is what the rest of us call common sense. it's so often right. It's especially dependable when faith in ridiculous nonsense is involved. On May 22, I hope the people I talked to in New York will consider the fact that that small voice of reason was right all along.

It's a dreadful, terrible pity that they won't, and we all know it. It's tragic - to see young people like the guy holding the sign here, perhaps destined to continue holding onto this absurd faith, even when it is utterly proven to be pure bullshit. My heart goes out to him and the many who believe and profess this nonsense about next Saturday.

Train Up A Child

"Get them while they're young." This is the unspoken (and not so unspoken) mission of churches everywhere.

They understand how critical it is to gain converts before they become adults...before they're exposed to science, history, other religions and other points of view. They aggressively target children and youth with marketing campaigns that rival many advertising companies. They sponsor events, activities, games and lots of free food for the opportunity to influence impressionable minds.

Footage of Christian Lou Engle preaching on Seven Mountains Dominionism and the importance of Christians taking control of government.

Prophet Muhammad was a zero

This clip is from an "Intelligence Squared" debate on the life of Muhammad. Brother Douglas Murray is giving his talk.

Take a look at this passage from the holey Quran. Since Allah does not exist, Muhamamd by default has to be credited with authoring the contents of the Quran.

Qur'an (8:12) - "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them"

Here's the conclusion any sensible person will arrive at. If you are religious, you will conclude that Muhammad was the prophet of Satan masquerading as a prophet of God. If you are an atheist like me, you will conclude that Muhammad was an evil opportunistic man who had no qualms about hurting others and couldnt care less about what legacy he left behind after he was dead and gone.

He will never rest in peace after all this bloodshed that he has caused by writing a book called Quran.

I'm an ex-muslim atheist, but I can respect people like Buddha and Jesus. Muhammad? Too violent and materialistic for my sensibilities.

Muhammad needs to earn respect, just like everyone else need to. You cant simply write a book of fairytales and yell out that it was sent down from the sky by God and demand respect, admiration and obedience from people. That;s just not on. And yet, that;s exactly what Muhammad did. He said in the hadith and I quote: "None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind" Anas, book of Sahih Bukhari.

Price on oil and the war on terror

The Rachel Maddow Show, MSNBC, 5-5-2011

Science and the paranormal

Since the dawn of civilization humans have been fascinated by phenomena which appear to lie outside the scope of science. Our history is peppered with accounts of psychics predicting the future, mediums conversing with the dead, and aliens in UFO's abducting earthlings.

Today the likes of Deepak Chopra confuse people with their quantum psychobabble and there is widespread belief that the moon and planets influence our behavior, that "psychic surgeons" can remove tumors without making incisions and that Uri Geller bends spoons with the power of his mind. Do these effects really lie outside the scope of modern day science?

This lecture examines paranormal phenomena and describes how many of the effects can be explained by perfectly "natural" means. The presentation is highlighted by a number of "demonstrations" aimed at increasing the awareness of the need to evaluate "paranormal" phenomena by critical scientific methods.

But his efforts have failed to yield any positive outcome, and his people are becoming more desperate.

March 2008. Tibet erupts as the biggest uprising since China took control in 1959, spreads across the country. The Tibetan people, for one brief moment, demonstrate to the world their unhappiness under Chinese rule and their desire for freedom. But China cracks down hard on the protests. It is also the year of the Beijing Olympics.

Video 2/6

Even as the unrest spreads in Tibet, exile Tibetans in India, frustrated by the lack of political progress, set out on a march to their homeland, convinced that this is the only action they can take to support their countrymen. Meanwhile, there is a huge groundswell of international sympathy for the Tibetan cause.

Video 3/6

This is a year of dramatic possibilities for Tibet. Can the Dalai Lama's strategy of non-violence and compromise based on his Buddhist beliefs finally make a breakthrough?

In The Sun Behind the Clouds: Tibet's Struggle for Freedom, Tibetan filmmaker, Tenzing Sonam, and his partner, Ritu Sarin, take a uniquely Tibetan perspective on the trials and tribulations of the Dalai Lama and his people as they continue their struggle for freedom in the face of determined suppression by one of the world's biggest and most powerful nations. The filmmakers had intimate access to the Dalai Lama and followed him over the course of an eventful year, which included the 2008 protests in Tibet, the international response to it, the Beijing Olympics, and the breakdown in talks between his representatives and the Chinese government.

Video 5/6

Set against this backdrop, the film explores the interplay between the personal and the historic, spirituality and politics, and the tension between the Dalai Lama's efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Tibet situation based on compromise and dialogue, and the impatience of a younger generation of Tibetans who are ready to take a more confrontational course.

Atheist Comedy: Fine-Tuned Universe

I'm shocked people still use the fine-tuned universe argument. Though this counterargument is hardly new, it quite thoroughly blows the fine-tuned universe argument out of the water; and I thought it would be fun to give it the DarkMatter treatment.

The difference between religion and science

Faith has no checks and balances, no follow-up investigations ot see if an intuition works. Science does. As documented fully in the new atheist and other recent literature, it is precisely the certainty, indeed the madness, of faith - the unbredled conviction that one is doing God's work - that has over the centuries and down to the present day enabled otherwise normal human beings to commit the most cruel atrocities against their fellow humans.

Arthur Eddington "My Two Tables"

Sir Arthur Eddington, FRS, was the experimentalist most responsible for confirming the theory of relativity. He was one of those giants in physics and astronomy whose shoulders we stand on today.

"My Two Tables" was a lecture prepared for a 1927 physics course (The Gifford Lectures) at the University of Edinburgh. It was later re-published in the book, "The Nature of the Physical World" in 1928.

This version is actually slightly abbreviated in places, for clarity of meaning.

The Power of Nightmares

This film explores the origins in the 1940s and 50s of Islamic Fundamentalism in the Middle East, and Neoconservatism in America, parallels between these movements, and their effect on the world today.

From the introduction to Part 1:

Both [the Islamists and Neoconservatives were idealists who were born out of the failure of the liberal dream to build a better world. And both had a very similar explanation for what caused that failure. These two groups have changed the world, but not in the way that either intended. Together, they created today's nightmare vision of a secret, organized evil that threatens the world. A fantasy that politicians then found restored their power and authority in a disillusioned age. And those with the darkest fears became the most powerful.
