Atheist exclusivism and moments in atheist history

Warming! stupidity

Quote: "Atheism in the Marxist form is repudiated by many modern atheists, who regard Marxism as a sort of religion itself. Nevertheless, it cannot be ignored as having had a massive impact on how widespread atheism is today."

I am by no means talking about atheist here in america but never the less there is a legacy that must be remembered.

I don't pretend to conflate atheists with all of communism but there is a fair amount of atheists who wish to conflate the heterodox actions of Christians who are not following the teachings of Jesus Christ. The very core of communism was a belief in evolution and deep hatred of all things Religious. If you question why some people are prejudice and discriminate against atheists then remember recent history.

Note just the USSR and China figures. This is clear evidence and a deductively valid issue as to why atheism is feared and considered dangerous. The greatest activator for hatred of atheism is any issue dealing with hatred of religion. China would like to crush all religion but I suggest they are barely tolerating religion because of pressure from other nations. As it is this potential super power does not have the greatest human rights record. If atheists like Christopher Hitchens want to kill the poison that is religion then I suggest it is not helping atheists to be trusted or help to quiet the fears of people who want a free and open market place of ideas in the public commons.

If you are an atheist and you want to close off and remove the freedom of religion then how are you different then the desires of the power mad atheists of the cultural revolution of China or the U.S.S.R. The over 130 million killed in the name of power mad Atheists are still a fresh memory of some and atheists need to be objective and factor this in to any hatred you may have against Religion.

If Atheists want freedom from religion then China may be the place to live. Otherwise try to understand what liberty and a free and open market place of ideas means to the continued health of this Constitutional Republic that promises freedom of religion as key to the liberties we enjoy here in the USA. Close that free and open market place of ideas and freedom will die along with it.

Judge Wants 10C Monument in Tennessee Courthouse

Proposed Hawkins County courthouse display called 'unconstitutional'

ROGERSVILLE (WATE) - A Hawkins County judge wants to have a "Foundations of American Law and Government" display put up at the justice center that opened in January, but there's controversy.

The suggested plan is to put up several framed historic documents and the Ten Commandments up on a bare wall in the building.

The other documents are: the Mayflower Compact, Declaration of Independence, Magna Carta, Star Spangled Banner, National Motto, Preamble to the Tennessee Constitution, Bill of Rights, Picture of Lady Justice, Benjamin Franklin's epitaph, George Washington's inaugural address and prayer at Valley Forge, National Pledge, Tennessee House Resolution 0815 and Tennessee Senate Resolution 0158.

"I was traveling to different courthouses in the area and I noticed most courthouses have an American Heritage display. I realized Hawkins County did not have one. We've been clear from the beginning that the purpose of the display is not to promote religion, but to explain the role religion played in the founding of this country," said Judge Taylor.

But a Wisconsin based group called the Freedom From Religion Foundation wrote a letter to the County Commissioners. The group's Co-President Annie Laurie Gaylor says they feel the display is unconstitutional.

"It's clear he's trying to use the monument to promote his personal views on religion," said Gaylor.

In the letter, they point out specific examples, like how the words "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance are much larger than the rest of the page.

"Admittedly, on the plaque, that font is larger than the rest of the plaque. But the core of the pledge is in that portion," said Judge Taylor, in response.

The letter points out that the Ten Commandments have no relation to the civic heritage of the United States.

"There is a Supreme Court decision to not put the Ten Commandments in courthouses," said Gaylor.

"The federal courts agree this type of display is not a violation of separation of church and state," said Judge Taylor.

The display is backed by some local churches like East Rogersville Baptist Church. They raised $1,500 to help get the display put up.

"It's really sad we have people who wrote the letter, and want to whitewash our society. We were founded as a Christian nation," said Pastor Steve Owenby.

"We feel like this is something that's supported by our community and our law allows it. We'd like to be left alone to put it up," said Judge Taylor.

The next step is for the county attorney to look into the matter and advice the county commission on if they are legally okay to vote on the display.

Witchcraft Tainted Wedding Dress

Judge Judy rules against "touched" Deliverance Minister.

Below is an article about the ceremony that included 144,000 clergy in which the plaintiff participated:

Unification Church leader Sun Myung Moon's latest attempt at wedding himself to Christian leaders is, literally, through weddings. On April 27th he presided over a mass wedding ceremony in which some 700 clergy and their wives renewed their wedding vows. The Washington Times, reporting on the event, stated,

In a "marriage blessing and renewal ceremony" presided over by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the group of mostly Christian pastors exchanged rings and declared that despite differing theologies a lifelong family commitment is the common thread of all religions. (The Washington Times, April 28, 2002)

The ceremony was broadcast to all fifty states and other countries. Clergy meetings were also held in other cities across the country, including Mobile, AL. A similar meeting was held in Birmingham on April 13th (see the article "Unholy Matrimony" in this issue).

Rev. Michael Jenkins, a Unification Church minister, "said the general aim of the 'blessing' was to include 144,000 clergy worldwide to fulfill a biblical image of the faithful 'being sealed' by God and representing 'all nations, tribes, peoples and tongues.'" (The Washington Times, April 28, 2002) While there is certainly nothing wrong with clergy renewing their wedding vows and affirming their commitment to family, it is troubling that they would do so under the auspices of the false god and the false messiah of the Unification Church or its affiliates.

For example, in the course of the wedding ceremony Moon, "declared that the couples were 'committed to becoming true husbands and wives.'" (The Washington Times, April 28, 2002) In Moon's theology one can only become a "true" husband and wife through being associated with the "True Parents" (Moon and his wife). It is through that connection that salvation comes. Thus, while this may be a renewal of wedding vows to those clergy who participate, to Moon it is an affirmation and acknowledgement of his messiahship.

Acupuncture - effective at treating pain

Is acupuncture effective at treating pain or disorders? I'll give the scientific answer to that question, and explain why I don't recommend acupuncture for any condition.

A few notes, and some references:
1. Toothpick acupuncture does NOT involve inserting the toothpick in the skin. It was merely placed against the skin in a needle guide-tube to give a sharp sensation, then removed.

2. In the USA, acupuncturists are required to meet sterile standards, use one-use-only needles or autoclaved (sterilized) needles, and must be licensed to practice.

3. I'm not really addressing the acupressure and non-insertive traditions of some Japanese acupuncture forms. Certainly these are similar to non-insertive sham treatments, but it should be noted that the placement of fingers or toothpicks is not important for the effect.

Arab 'rape by deceit' conviction in Israel defended

The crime of rape generally refers to non-consensual sexual intercourse.

But an Israeli court has jailed an Arab man in the country for 18 months for "rape by deception" after having consensual sex with an Israeli woman.

Sabbar Kashur had falsely introduced himself to the woman as a Jewish bachelor looking for a long-term relationship before they had sex.

The woman accused him of rape after finding out he was Arab.

Merav Mor, a director of resource development at the Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel, defended the court sentencing in an interview with Al Jazeera.

Speaking from Tel Aviv, she said that the sex between the two was not consensual because Kashur gave the woman false information.

The Poetry of Reality (An Anthem for Science)

The Poetry of Reality is the fifth installment in the Symphony of Science music video series. It features 12 scientists and science enthusiasts, including Michael Shermer, Jacob Bronowski, Carl Sagan, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, Jill Tarter, Lawrence Krauss, Richard Feynman, Brian Greene, Stephen Hawking, Carolyn Porco, and PZ Myers, promoting science through words of wisdom.

Lyrics:

[Michael Shermer]
Science is the best tool ever devised
For understanding how the world works

[Jacob Bronowski]
Science is a very human form of knowledge
We are always at the brink of the known

[Carl Sagan]
Science is a collaborative enterprise
Spanning the generations
We remember those who prepared the way
Seeing for them also

[Neil deGrasse Tyson]
If you're scientifically literate,
The world looks very different to you
And that understanding empowers you

Refrain:
[Richard Dawkins]
There's real poetry in the real world
Science is the poetry of reality

[Sagan]
We can do science
And with it, we can improve our lives

[Jill Tarter]
The story of humans is the story of ideas
That shine light into dark corners

[Lawrence Krauss]
Scientists love mysteries
They love not knowing

[Richard Feynman]
I don't feel frightened by not knowing things
I think it's much more interesting

[Brian Greene]
There's a larger universal reality
of which we are all a part

[Stephen Hawking]
The further we probe into the universe
The more remarkable are the discoveries we make

[Carolyn Porco]
The quest for the truth, in and of itself,
Is a story that's filled with insights

(Refrain)

[Greene]
From our lonely point in the cosmos
We have through the power of thought
Been able to peer back to a brief moment
After the beginning of the universe

[PZ Myers]
I think that science changes the way your mind works
To think a little more deeply about things

[Dawkins]
Science replaces private prejudice
With publicly verifiable evidence

(Refrain)

Three surprising things you probably didn't know about Islam.

This subject WILL affect you in the near future, so take the chance to inform yourself now - before it does.

Stupid Scientology

Councillor John Dixon is facing a disciplinary hearing after calling Scientology "stupid" in a post on Twitter.

Wales' public standards watchdog said John Dixon is likely to have breached the code of conduct for local authority members with his short message last year.

I didn't know the Scientologists had a church on Tottenham Court Road. Just hurried past in case the stupid rubs off.

The Church of Scientology, whose followers include entertainers Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirsty Allie, made an official complaint after spotting the posting last year.

The "church", created by American science fiction writer L Ron Hubbard in the 1950s, has a reputation for being fiercely litigious and has been accused in the US courts of trying to use the legal system to destroy critics.

Mr John Dixon, who is Cardiff council's executive member for health and social services, as well as being a web developer and microbiologist, is contesting the complaint saying he was writing in a personal capacity.

John Dixon posted the message on his Twitter account, then called CllrJohnDixon, when he was in London last year buying his wife-to-be a wedding ring.

The Tweet said: "I didn't know the Scientologists had a church on Tottenham Court Road. Just hurried past in case the stupid rubs off."

In a follow-up tweet after the Scientologists registered to receive all his Twitter posts, John Dixon posted: "Just realised the Scientologists are following me. Quick everyone, pretend you're out."

Through the Wormhole, Is there a Creator?

Hosted by Morgan Freeman, Through the Wormhole explores the deepest mysteries of existence — the questions that have puzzled mankind for eternity.

1/5

What are we made of? What was there before the beginning? Are we really alone? Is there a creator? These questions have been pondered by the most brilliant minds of the human race. Now, science has evolved to the point where hard facts and evidence may be able to provide us with answers.

2/5

It's perhaps the biggest, most controversial mystery in the cosmos. Did our Universe just come into being by random chance, or was it created by a God who nurtures and sustains all life?

3/5

The latest science is showing that the four forces governing our universe are phenomenally finely tuned. So finely that it had led many to the conclusion that someone, or something, must have calibrated them; a belief further backed up by evidence that everything in our universe may emanate from one extraordinarily elegant and beautiful design known as the E8 Lie Group.

4/5

While skeptics hold that these findings are neither conclusive nor evidence of a divine creator, some cutting edge physicists are already positing who this God is: an alien gamester who's created our world as the ultimate SIM game for his own amusement. It's an answer as compelling as it is disconcerting.

Of Catholicism and Capone

There can be little doubt that had any other organization other than the Catholic church that was trusted with the care of children, for instance an orphanage, a school, or a daycare center, had been found to not only been abusing the children, but to swear the victims to secrecy, and then to move the molester to another center... there simply would be no debate about allowing the organization to conduct its own investigation and to impose its own 'punishments' of repentance. Both the individuals and the organization would be up on criminal charges before you could say knife.

However for the Catholic Church, law enforcement seems powerless. The church simply says child molestation is evil, and that through true repentance can come renewal, or some equally nebulous BS, and the church gets away with such criminal acts- scot free!

However even if institutionalized child molestation doesn't take the church down, it has been a huge blow to it's credibility. In that sense it's kind of like Al Capone being taken down for tax evasion. Especially given that the Pope has stated that he thinks that condoms actually increase the spread of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa!

A Challenge to all Atheists, Agnostics, Freethinkers, etc

A challenge to all Atheists, Agnostics, Freethinkers, Skeptics, Secularists, Humanists, and Non-Religious...

The challenge is simple and subtle, yet requires diligence and perseverance.

The Challenge is this...
Refrain from using the word "God" as a proper noun. When talking about a specific god, use that god's name. The most relevant, of course, are Yahweh, Allah and Elohim.
Why do this? What's the point?

When referring to a believers god by name, you are depriving that god its imaginary exalted status of being the only one, true god, and forcing the believer to put his/her god into perspective with all the countless others. By referring to these gods by name and abandoning the blanket term God, we force the believer to consider the character of these gods as individuals with their own unique nature, attributes, personalities, and desires. By doing such a simple of a task, we are placing a tiny seed into the subconscious of our culture about the nature of these gods.

Their god does not deserve the status of God. No god does. At least not until they can demonstrate that their god is the one, true god.

Until then, their ancient idols should remain as they are, one of many and nothing special.

A Comedy Central television channel confirmed to AFP that the network had added a series of audio bleeps to the episode broadcast late Wednesday, which effectively removed all references to Prophet Mohammed.

"I can confirm that Comedy Central added additional audio bleeps after the cut of the episode was delivered by the producers," the spokesman said. Comedy Central would not confirm that the changes were linked to statements made by the New York-based Revolution Muslim group earlier that week.

The extremist group said South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker risked the same fate as slain Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, who was murdered by a Muslim extremist in Amsterdam in 2004.

Revolution Muslim posted the address of Stone and Parker's Los Angeles production offices, but denied they were encouraging violence. "We have to warn Matt and Trey that what they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo van Gogh for airing this show," the group said.

A spokesman for the group denied the statement was an incitement. "Revolution Muslim only wants those offended to be able to voice their opposition by letters to the show's creators," a spokesman told CNN. The Muslim group's statement followed the April 14 episode of "South Park," where the Prophet Mohammed appeared wearing a bear mascot costume in order to avoid his image being shown.

"South Park," which follows the surreal and often profane adventures of four schoolchildren in a fictitious Colorado town, has regularly lampooned religions during its 13 years on the air. Atlantic Online blogger Andrew Sullivan accused Comedy Central of "wussing out" by censoring Wednesday's episode. "'South Park' has long had Jesus and Satan, they have ridiculed Mormonism, eviscerated Scientology, mocked Catholicism and showed the Buddha actually doing lines of coke," Sullivan noted. "None of the adherents of these other faiths have threatened to kill Matt and Trey, but, of course, some Sunni Islamists did so. So what does Comedy Central do?

They wussed out even further." Cartoon depictions of the Prophet Mohammed in Scandinavian media outlets in recent years have led to violence and plots to murder those responsible.

In 2005, Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten published 12 drawings focused on Islam, several of which were seen as linking the religion and the Prophet Mohammed to modern terrorism and suicide bombings. The cartoons led to angry protests by Muslims worldwide, leaving dozens of people dead and causing major damage to Danish embassies and other facilities.

Inside Natures Giants - The Giraffe

Inside Nature's Giants dissects the largest animals on the planet to uncover their evolutionary secrets. Most wildlife documentaries tell you how an animal behaves, but by dissecting the animal and studying its anatomy we can we can see how an animal works. Experts in comparative anatomy, evolution and behaviour will put some of the most popular and enigmatic large animals under the knife. Veterinary scientist, Mark Evans, will interpret their findings, biologist Simon Watts tests the animals' physiology in the field and Richard Dawkins traces back the animals' place on the tree of life.
